Ten Ways Resistance Might Be Showing Up In Your Life

Have you ever noticed that the more you resist something, the more it seems to linger? This concept, often summarised by the phrase "what you resist persists," can be a powerful reminder in our journey toward personal growth and wellness. In today's blog, I'm diving deep into this idea and exploring how embracing change, rather than resisting it, can lead to transformative results in your life.

Resistance is a psychological response where we push against changes or new ideas, often due to fear of the unknown or discomfort. It can also manifest in our personal relationships, such as when we resist having difficult conversations with our partners or avoid making new friends due to fear of rejection. It often shows up as procrastination, anxiety, or even physical tension.

Understanding resistance is the first step in learning to manage it.

For instance, resisting healthy habits can damage our bodies. Avoiding exercise or not following a balanced, nutrient-dense diet can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and other health issues. Similarly, resistance affects our mental health, too, causing stress, anxiety, and even depression.

Allow me to share a personal journey. When I decided to prioritise fitness, I felt significant resistance. The thought of committing to regular workouts on top of all my other commitments as a wife, mum and employee was overwhelming, and I found myself making excuses to avoid it. However, I started small with activities I enjoyed, like Pilates and longer walks, and gradually increased my activity level. I began to notice physical improvements and a boost in my mental health. Embracing the change, rather than fighting it, made all the difference. I share this with you to let you know that I understand the challenges you may face in your journey.

Here are ten ways resistance might be showing up in your life:

  1. Procrastination: Delaying tasks that you know are important.
  2. Avoidance: Steering clear of situations that make you uncomfortable.
  3. Excuses: Finding reasons not to start new projects.
  4. Negative Self-Talk: Telling yourself you can't or shouldn't try something new.
  5. Fear of Failure: Worrying about not succeeding, so you don't try.
  6. Perfectionism: Setting unrealistic standards that prevent you from starting.
  7. Overwhelm: Feeling too stressed or busy to initiate change.
  8. Doubt: Questioning your abilities and potential outcomes.
  9. Comfort Zone: Preferring to stay within the safety of familiar routines.
  10. Physical Discomfort: Experiencing physical symptoms like tension or fatigue when facing change.

When managing resistance effectively, mindfulness can be a powerful tool. Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, and mindful journaling can empower you to stay present and accept change. These practices are not just stress-reducing, but they also make transitions smoother. If you find you need help to stick to an exercise routine, remember to start with activities you enjoy! Whether dancing, hiking, or joining one of my new Pilates classes at The Wellness Studio, incorporating enjoyable exercises can help reduce resistance. Gradually increase the intensity as you grow more comfortable, and remember, you're in control of your journey.

Let's talk about another resistance my clients often face—dietary changes. These can also be challenging. Make minor adjustments, like adding more fruits and vegetables to your meals first. Over time, these minor changes add up, making it easier to adopt a healthier diet without overwhelming resistance. Positive affirmations can also reshape your mindset. Try repeating affirmations like, "I am open to change" or "With every decision I make, I make progress." This practice can help diminish resistance and encourage a more positive outlook on change.

To help you embrace change, here are some practical steps:

  • Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve.
  • Break It Down: Divide your goals into smaller, manageable steps.
  • Stay Flexible: Be willing to adjust your plans as needed.
  • Seek Support: Surround yourself with a supportive community.

Reflect on aspects of your life that feel stagnant or stressful. Often, these are areas where resistance is present. Remember, failure is part of the journey! Each setback is a learning opportunity. Keep trying different strategies until you find what works for you.

Change is a natural part of life, and learning to embrace it can lead to incredible growth. Transform resistance into acceptance and see the fantastic results that follow.
