Wimbledon is in full swing, and there's something about watching those matches that always gets me thinking. The players out there? They don't get points for standing still and hoping the ball magically lands in the right spot. They step up, swing, and sometimes it's ace after ace – but sometimes, honestly, it's a miss. The magic, though, is in giving it a go.

It's a lesson the tennis greats know by heart: you miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

And it's not just about Centre Court. In wellness, just like in tennis, it's all too easy to play it safe. We settle into routines, stick to the advice we've heard a thousand times – eat this, do that, breathe, repeat. Easy to follow, yes, but often missing the spark that makes change feel real and worthwhile.

But if you've ever watched a match turn around with a bold shot – a risky volley, a powerful serve, a player going for it on match point – you'll know that breakthrough moments come from doing something different.

Lessons from Wimbledon: Progress Over Perfection

  • Take the shot, even if you don't feel ready: There's rarely the perfect moment. The champions at Wimbledon sometimes miss, but they always swing when it matters. What's your version of stepping up for the next point – even if your knees are a bit wobbly?
  • Mix up your play: If what you've tried before isn't working, let's not be afraid to try a new approach. Perhaps that means adjusting your morning routine, signing up for a new fitness challenge or experimenting with an exercise or meal you'd generally avoid.
  • Bounce back quickly: The best players in the world shake off missed points and prepare for the next shot. You don't need to dwell on what didn't stick last week; you get a fresh try every single day.
  • Find your own game: Wimbledon isn't won with someone else's style – it's about leaning into your strengths, quirks, and what feels sustainable for you.

Action Steps: Your Wellness, Your Way

  • Think of one thing you've held back from trying, big or small. What's your "serve" you've wanted to make, but worry you'll miss?  
  • Give yourself permission to try just once, for your own sake. No need for perfection, points or external approval. Make it about the effort, not the outcome.
  • If you miss? You're in good company! The best in the world miss…and then get right back on the court.

And remember: the only guarantee comes from doing nothing. Every step, every effort is a chance to learn more about what works for you.
