What the Eclipse Taught Me About Getting Through the Dark

Aug 13, 2026

There’s something quietly extraordinary about watching the sky go dark in the middle of the day. During a recent eclipse here in the UK, the light faded almost completely for a few minutes; the world seemed to pause, the birds went silent, and then, just as we knew it would, everything brightened again.

I stood outside and watched. For those few minutes, nothing else mattered. It felt like a message, and I keep thinking about it.

That darkness was never the end of the story. It was simply part of it. The same is true for you.

Our emotions follow cycles, just like the sky

What stood out to me was how sure everyone was that the light would come back. No one doubted it. We all knew.

But when we’re going through tough times, that certainty disappears. Grief, anxiety, overwhelm, and sadness can make us feel like things will never get better. But these feelings always change. They move through us, just like the shadow crossing the sun.

Knowing this doesn’t make hard times easier, but it helps to remember the difference between “this is unbearable and permanent” and “this is unbearable and passing.” That small change in perspective can help us hold on until things get better.

Next time you feel a heavy emotion, quietly remind yourself, “This is a wave. It will crest and fall.” You don’t have to fully believe it yet. Just let the idea take root.

Sitting with the hard stuff is its own kind of strength

People often tell us to “stay positive.” But real resilience comes from letting ourselves feel what’s really there. When we stay with a tough emotion instead of avoiding it, we learn that we can cope and come out stronger on the other side.

Being strong means being gentle with yourself, even when it’s hard. Feeling your feelings is how you build resilience, one moment at a time.

Small, kind ways to support yourself in dark moments

When life feels heavy, small acts of care help us get through. Here are a few you can try:

  • Put your hand on your heart and take three slow breaths. This tells your body you are safe. You can do this anywhere, anytime, and no one will notice.

  • Write down one thing you’re proud of today. It doesn’t have to be big. Getting out of bed counts. Sending a hard message counts. Noticing your effort is a quiet way to respect yourself.

  • Play a song that matches your mood. Not to cover up your feelings, but to make them feel less lonely.

  • Go outside and look at the sky for a few minutes. Fresh air and open space can remind you that the world keeps moving, and so do you.

  • Let yourself rest, even if you don’t have a reason. Rest isn’t just for when you finish everything. Sometimes, just needing it is enough.

Choose just one. One small act of kindness toward yourself is enough to start.

Trust that the light returns

You don’t have to force brighter days; they will come on their own. While you wait, just be gentle and kind to yourself. Keep breathing, keep resting, and treat yourself as kindly as you would a good friend.

The light is already coming back to you, even if you can’t see it yet.

A reflective journal prompt for you today

Get a notebook, make yourself a warm drink, and think about this:

Think about a tough time you made it through. What helped you get through it? What strength did you find that you still have today?

You’ve already made it through all your hardest days so far. That’s what resilience is.

No matter what this season brings, remember: the light always returns, and you are stronger than you think.
