What Abut You? Why emotional wellbeing deserves the same care as your physical health

Why emotional wellbeing deserves the same care as your physical health

We sign up for gym memberships. We book the fitness classes. We try to eat well, drink more water, get our steps in, and generally look after our bodies as best we can.

We charge our phones every night. We service the car. We keep the house running, make the appointments, remember the birthdays, restock the fridge, and hold a hundred little details in our heads so nothing falls through the cracks.

And here we are, right in the thick of summer. For some of you, the kids or grandchildren are home, and the routines have gone out the window. For others, the quieter pace of August brings its own kind of pressure. Perhaps you’re supporting ageing parents, holding space for other people’s needs, or simply carrying that ever-present mental load without the usual structure to lean on. Whatever your summer looks like, the days feel fuller than they probably should, and you’re still trying to keep everything ticking over in the background.

So let me ask you something gently. In amongst all that maintaining, all that looking after, all that keeping-everyone-happy... when did you last truly tend to your inner world? To how you actually feel?

Not your body. Not your to-do list. Not everyone else’s needs.

You. Your emotional wellbeing. The inner part of you that quietly carries all of it.

I see so often that we’re brilliant at maintaining everything around us. But emotional wellbeing? That’s the thing we tend to leave until we’re already running on empty. Stress, anxiety, overthinking, broken sleep, that constant feeling of being “on” - we let it build until it feels completely normal.

It isn’t normal. And you deserve better than simply coping.

The hidden gap: why emotional wellbeing gets left behind

So why does this happen? Why is emotional wellbeing so often the thing that slides to the bottom of the pile?

A few reasons, and I think you’ll recognise at least one.

It’s harder to measure. You can count your steps and track your water intake. But how do you measure emotional exhaustion? There’s no little ring that closes when you’ve finally had enough. So it stays invisible, even to us.

We get praised for coping. So many of us, especially women, are quietly rewarded for holding it all together. For carrying on. For being the strong, reliable one who never drops the ball. And that praise can trap us into thinking we should never wobble.

We don’t notice how depleted we are until something forces us to. Often it’s the body or the mind that finally waves a flag. A run of poor sleep, a shorter temper, a heaviness we can’t quite name.

We mistake signals for personality. We tell ourselves, “I’m just a stressed person,” or “I’ve always been snappy,” or “I’m just tired all the time.” But feeling wired, flat, or overwhelmed isn’t a personality trait. It’s a signal. It’s your inner world asking for a little care.

Emotional wellbeing is not a luxury. It’s not a nice-to-have for when you finally get a spare afternoon. It is part of your health. Full stop.

Before we go on, I’d love you to pause and gently sit with these two questions:

  • What have I been managing lately that I haven’t truly been tending to?

  • Where in my life do I look “fine” on the outside but feel stretched underneath?

No pressure to fix anything. Just notice. That noticing is where everything begins.

And yet, we already know how to look after what matters.

Here’s the lovely thing. You already know how to look after what matters. You do it every single day, without even thinking about it. Let me show you what I mean.

You already invest in your physical health.

You join the gym. You go to classes. You meal prep, you walk, you stretch, you build little routines to keep your body strong and well.

Looking after your body feels normal. Responsible, even. Nobody questions it.

But your mind and your nervous system need that same ongoing care. They’re working just as hard as your muscles, and right now, in the middle of a summer that hasn’t slowed down the way you hoped, they’re probably working even harder.

And your inner world deserves that same consistent care — not just attention when things fall apart.

You keep everything charged, except yourself.

Think about it. You plug in your phone every night: your watch, your laptop, the kids’ tablets before a long car journey. You understand instinctively that things run better when they’re topped up.

And yet so many women are trying to function on emotional empty, running the whole show on a battery that’s flashing red.

When you’re at low battery emotionally, everything suffers. Your patience thins. Your focus scatters. Your sleep gets worse. Even small decisions feel like mountains.

And when you’re running on empty, everything feels harder. Your mood, your sleep, your patience, your ability to think clearly — it all takes the hit.

Try this: start noticing your own “low battery” signs. Maybe it’s snapping over something tiny, or feeling tearful for no obvious reason, or that heavy fog when you can’t seem to make a decision. Then build in one small daily reset, even five minutes, before you hit empty rather than after.

You service what carries you.

Cars get their MOT. The boiler gets checked. Teeth get cleaned and looked over. We accept, without argument, that preventative care makes sense.

But how many of us ignore our own internal warning lights? For months. Sometimes for years. We drive on with the engine light glowing on the dashboard, hoping it’ll sort itself out.

Those signals are worth responding to early, before they become something harder to ignore.

Try this: ask yourself honestly, what warning lights have I been brushing off? The tension headaches, the clenched jaw, the racing thoughts at 2 am. Then start a simple weekly emotional check-in with yourself. A few quiet minutes, once a week, to ask how you’re really doing.

You protect your little rituals, but what about your emotional ones?

Your morning coffee before anyone else is up. Your evening shower. Your skincare. Walking the dog in the fresh air. These small rituals help us feel human, don’t they? They anchor us.

But here’s the gap. Many women have no ritual that helps them process how they actually feel. We have rituals for the body and the skin and the routine, but nothing for the emotions we’re quietly carrying all day.

Emotional regulation deserves a place in your daily life too, right alongside all those other little rituals that help you feel grounded.

Try this: create a simple five-minute emotional wellbeing ritual. It could be:

  • sitting quietly and noticing how you feel, without judging it

  • tapping gently for a few minutes (more on that in a moment)

  • taking a few slow breaths before you react to something

  • placing a hand on your heart and simply checking in with yourself

Small. Doable. Even in the middle of a summer where nothing else feels routine.

What actually helps when you’re stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in your head?

This is where I want to remind you of something I love.

EFT tapping.

If you haven’t come across it before, EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a simple, practical tool that helps calm your nervous system. You tap lightly on a few points on the body while tuning in to how you’re feeling. It sounds almost too simple, I know. But it can genuinely help reduce the intensity of difficult emotions and bring a greater sense of calm, clarity, and steadiness.

Here’s what I love most about it. EFT isn’t about forcing positivity or pretending everything’s fine when it isn’t. It’s not about slapping a smile on a hard day. It’s about helping your body and mind feel safer, so you can respond to life differently, with a bit more space and a bit less overwhelm.

And the best part? You don’t need to wait until you’re at breaking point to use it.

Try this:

  • tap when your mind won’t switch off at night

  • use it before a stressful conversation

  • reach for it when anxiety rises for no obvious reason

  • make it a daily reset rather than an emergency fix

Especially over the summer, when the days feel unpredictable and your usual calm-down moments are harder to find, having a tool you can use anywhere- on the sofa, in the car, in the bathroom for five stolen minutes- makes all the difference to your emotional resilience.

Why online support makes this so much easier

Now, I know what a lot of you might be thinking. “That sounds lovely, Katie, but when on earth would I fit it in?”

This is exactly why I made this kind of support available online.

You can access it from home. No travelling. No extra pressure. No needing to “get yourself together” first before you’re allowed to show up. You can lean on it in your pyjamas at the end of a long day if that’s what you need.

It fits around real life. The messy, wonderful, unpredictable real life you’re living right now, whether that’s children or grandchildren at home, caring for ageing parents, navigating the sandwich generation stretch of looking after everyone at once, or simply carrying your own quietly relentless mental load through a summer that hasn’t slowed down the way you hoped it might. And rather than a one-off burst of motivation that fades by the weekend, it offers gentle, ongoing support you can return to again and again, because the easier support is to access, the more likely you are actually to use it. And that’s the whole point.

An invitation to do something different

If you’ve spent years, maybe decades, looking after everyone and everything else, let this be your reminder.

Your inner world deserves care too.

You don’t have to keep waiting until things get worse. You don’t have to hit rock bottom before you’re allowed to reach for support. And you certainly don’t have to earn that support by struggling harder first.

You’re allowed to care for yourself now. Today. In the middle of the ordinary, busy summer, exactly as it is.

If any of this has struck a chord, Tapping into Wellness is a gentle place to begin. I designed it to help you feel calmer, more supported, and more in control of your feelings, without pressure or overwhelm.

If you’re curious, or if this feels like the little nudge you needed, you can explore Tapping into Wellness here.

Cheering you on to wellness success,

P.S. You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to feel better. Honestly, you don’t. Sometimes the biggest shifts begin with one small, supported step. This could be that step. And you’re more ready for it than you think.
