Wellness lessons from the Moon
Apr 08, 2026Welcome to this week's Wellness Goals Weekly, where each week, I share easy tips and resources to support your wellness journey.
Over the Easter bank holiday, I’ve been completely hooked watching the Artemis coverage, drawn in by the astronauts’ and their calm focus, teamwork, and courage as they face something extraordinary. A huge mission, humanity’s grand return to the moon and evidence of the sheer scale of what we can achieve when we set our sights on something extraordinary.
I realised that space exploration offers more than just scientific breakthroughs; it provides a mirror for our own wellness journeys.
The moon has watched over us for millennia. It pulls the tides and lights the dark. Yet it still holds many lessons for how we live, heal, and grow.
When we look closely at the cosmos, we find some beautiful metaphors for our nervous systems, daily habits, and emotional wellness.
In this week's Wellness Goals Weekly, let’s explore five specific lessons from the moon, with each one offering a practical way to bring more perspective, possibility, and balance to your everyday wellness.
1. Redefining what is possible for ourselves
When you think about the Artemis mission, the sheer logistics are mind-boggling. Decades ago, sending humans to the moon felt like pure science fiction. Even today, the idea of building a sustainable presence in space seems almost impossible. Yet, scientists and engineers break these monumental goals down into daily, manageable tasks.
In our own lives, we often build invisible walls around what we believe is possible for our health and happiness. You might tell yourself you will always be stressed, or that true peace is not achievable with your schedule. But just like a space mission, rewiring your nervous system and changing your life does not happen in one massive leap. It happens through small, consistent, deliberate steps.
Actionable tips:
-
Challenge your limiting beliefs: Notice when you use words like "always" or "never" regarding your health. Swap them for "until now" or "currently." This simple language shift opens your brain to new possibilities.
-
Set a micro-goal: Choose one tiny habit you want to change this week, like drinking an extra glass of water or taking three deep breaths before opening your emails. Small wins build the momentum required for giant leaps.
-
Open yourself to possibility: Make a list of past times you've surprised yourself or achieved something you once thought was out of reach. Keep it somewhere visible as a reminder that growth often starts with trying, even when you're not sure what's possible.
2. The importance and beauty of zooming out
Astronauts often report the "Overview Effect." This cognitive shift happens when they view Earth from space. From that vantage point, national borders vanish. The daily struggles that feel overwhelming on the ground suddenly seem very small.
When you are caught in the thick of a stressful week, your brain's threat-detection system (the amygdala) treats a missed deadline or a difficult conversation like a life-or-death emergency. Your perspective narrows. You develop tunnel vision. Zooming out allows you to engage your parasympathetic nervous system, signalling to your body that you are actually safe.
Actionable tips:
-
Practise the 10-10-10 rule: When a stressor hits, ask yourself: Will this matter in 10 days? 10 months? 10 years? This mental zoom-out instantly calms the brain's panic response.
-
Look at the sky: Take a two-minute break to step outside and look at the clouds or the stars. Expanding your physical horizon helps to expand your mental horizon, easing feelings of anxiety.
-
Map your progress: When you feel stuck, write down where you were a year ago and where you are today. Acknowledging how far you have come provides a much-needed broader perspective.
3. Embracing your natural phases
The moon does not force itself to be full every night. It moves gently through its phases, from the dark, quiet new moon to the bright, energetic full moon, and back again. We find this cycle beautiful, yet we rarely give ourselves the same grace.
Many of us expect to operate at 100% capacity, 365 days a year. When our energy dips, we punish ourselves with guilt. But human biology is cyclical. Your energy, hormones, and creative output naturally ebb and flow. Expecting constant, unbroken productivity goes against your wiring and quickly leads to burnout.
Actionable tips:
-
Track your energy: Keep a simple journal for two weeks, noting when you feel most energetic and when you feel sluggish. Look for patterns so you can start working with your natural rhythm instead of fighting it.
-
Honour the waning phase: When you feel your energy naturally dropping, give yourself permission to step back. Swap a high-intensity workout for gentle stretching, or clear a free evening in your diary.
-
Celebrate the darkness: Just as the new moon is a time for fresh starts, use your low-energy days for quiet reflection and planning, rather than forced action.
4. Trusting the unseen forces
The moon governs the tides of our oceans through gravity, that entirely invisible force that shapes the landscape of our planet. Just because we cannot see it does not mean we doubt its power.
In your wellness journey, the most powerful forces are often the ones you cannot see. Your thoughts, nervous system regulation, and self-talk are invisible. You cannot hold your subconscious beliefs in your hand. Yet they dictate the tide of your daily life. Trusting the process means believing in these unseen forces, even when you cannot see immediate results.
Actionable tips:
-
Acknowledge your inner tides: Pay attention to the invisible pull of your emotions. When you feel a wave of frustration or sadness, sit with it rather than pushing it away.
-
Nurture your invisible foundations: Dedicate time to practices that support your inner world, such as meditation, breathwork, or EFT tapping, knowing they are doing heavy lifting beneath the surface.
-
Focus on feeling, not just looking: Shift your wellness goals away from external markers (like the number on a scale) toward internal feelings (like having more energy or sleeping more soundly).
5. Reflecting the right light
I didn’t remember until I watched the astronauts on T.V over the past few days that the moon generates no visible light of its own. It simply reflects the light of the sun. Its brightness depends entirely on its alignment and on what it is exposed to.
Similarly, our nervous systems are highly attuned to our environments. Through co-regulation, we pick up and reflect the emotional states of those around us.
If you surround yourself with chronic stress or negativity, your body will mirror that state. If you align with peace and encouragement, you will start to reflect that warmth.
Actionable tips:
-
Audit your orbit: Take a gentle look at the people, media, and environments you interact with daily. Are they casting light, or are they draining your energy?
-
Seek out bright spaces: Intentionally spend time with people who leave you feeling uplifted, calm, and supported.
-
Be the light for someone else: When you regulate your own nervous system, you become a calming presence for others. Your peaceful energy gives those around you permission to relax.
Keep looking up
To sign off today’s blog, before I head into the garden for some soothing Easter sunshine, I’d love for you to remember what a miracle you are. You are here, alive on a floating rock in the vastness of space. Each breath and heartbeat shows the magic woven into everyday existence. That’s pretty special, isn’t it?
It’s easy to get caught up in the routines and expectations of life, but when you pause to truly take in the wonder of your own existence, it creates space for awe, gratitude, and possibility.
You are capable of reaching incredible heights. You’re also allowed to rest, retreat, and move through your natural cycles.
Most importantly, give yourself permission to make space for magic. Let in moments of wonder, joy, and gentle self-discovery. These are what make life truly beautiful.
Tonight, and every evening when you see the moon in the evening sky, let it be an anchor and a reminder to zoom out.
Until next time, cheering you on to wellness success
