The most important lessons I’ve learned about Wellness (so far)
Aug 13, 2025
Welcome to this week's Wellness Goals Weekly, your space for support, inspiration, and practical steps to help you thrive.
I turned 54 this week and have been reflecting on the lessons and moments that have shaped my approach to wellness. Each year brings more perspective, and I enjoy collecting these reminders.
Today, I’m kicking off with '54 Wellness Lessons at 54.’
This list isn’t about adding more tasks, because wellness isn’t reaching an ‘ideal' or perfect balance. It’s about showing up for yourself, learning what works, and letting go of what doesn’t.
Each lesson has contributed to my own path, and I hope they bring inspiration to yours.
Understanding Yourself
- Progress isn’t linear; there will be ups and downs, and both are okay.
- You can’t hate yourself into lasting change.
- Emotional regulation is the ultimate wellness tool.
- Self-compassion trumps self-criticism every time.
- Perfection is exhausting; it’s okay to be imperfect.
- You are not your thoughts; you’re the observer of them.
- It’s fine to outgrow habits, people, or goals that no longer serve you.
- Your intuition is often more accurate than you give it credit for.
- Rest is not laziness,it’s essential for growth.
- You can’t pour from an empty cup; prioritise yourself first.
Shifting Your Mindset
- Your worth isn’t tied to your productivity.
- You don’t have to earn your meals, just enjoy them.
- Mindset shifts are more powerful than quick fixes.
- Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
- Failing isn’t the opposite of success; it’s part of success.
- Gratitude can change your perspective on everything.
- Start where you are, not where you think you should be.
- Small steps every day beat grand gestures once a year.
- Give yourself permission to say no; it’s a full sentence.
- A bad day doesn’t mean a bad life.
Learning to Listen
- Your body tells you what it needs; pay attention to it.
- Hunger isn’t an enemy to fight.
- Movement should feel like a gift, not a punishment.
- Routines don’t have to be rigid; they should work for you.
- Sleep often solves more problems than overthinking.
- Listen to your emotions; they tell you where you need healing.
- Stress wants your attention; learn to respond rather than react.
- Breathe deeply, often, and intentionally.
- It’s okay to feel all the feelings; they’re valid.
- Trust that healing is not linear.
Building Healthy Foundations
- Hydration is one of the simplest, most effective wellness tools.
- Food is fuel and enjoyment; it’s not an either/or choice.
- You deserve to indulge in things that bring you joy.
- Surround yourself with people who feel like sunshine.
- Boundaries aren’t selfish; they’re necessary.
- Create a routine, but don’t be afraid to adapt it.
- Celebrate every win, no matter how tiny.
- Take breaks before you’re burnt out.
- Declutter your space; it also declutters your mind.
- Learn to differentiate between actual hunger and emotional hunger.
Beliefs That Set You Free
- The scales don’t show the whole picture of your health.
- You don’t need to do what everyone else is doing.
- Self-love isn’t selfish; it’s vital.
- Progress over perfection, every single time.
- Consistency matters more than intensity.
- Comparison will only slow you down; they’re on a different path.
- You can rewrite your narrative whenever you choose.
- It’s okay to rest before you feel exhausted.
- True wellness is about how you feel, not how you look.
- It’s never too late to start again.
Owning Your Journey
- You control what wellness means to you; nobody else gets to decide.
- Trust the process, even when it feels messy.
- Show yourself the same kindness that you’d give a best mate.
- You’ve survived 100% of your hard days so far; trust your ability to keep going.
These lessons aren’t rules or prescriptions; they’re gentle reminders of how you can nurture yourself in small, meaningful ways. Wellness is never one-size-fits-all, and that’s what makes it so personal and powerful.
There are more “54 lists” I’ve created that are coming soon, each focused on a different theme to spark ideas and keep you inspired, so keep an eye out for those.
Weekly Challenge
This week, pick one lesson that stands out. Reflect on why it resonates with you, and take one small action to apply it, no matter how tiny.
For example:
- If Lesson #9 (“Rest is not laziness”) speaks to you, carve out time to rest this week,guilt-free.
- If Lesson #5 from the Beliefs section (“Consistency matters more than intensity”) connects, commit to one small daily habit, like drinking water first thing in the morning or stretching for two minutes.
Small actions add up! I’d love to hear what you choose and how it goes. Just reply to share your reflections or note which lesson resonated.
