Step Outside Your Comfort Zone and Thrive
Jun 11, 2025
Fear has a remarkable way of keeping us nestled in our comfort zones. It's a natural reaction, built into our survival instincts to keep us in the safe and familiar. But while it keeps us cosy, it can also hold us back from experiencing growth, building confidence, and discovering meaningful opportunities.
This week, I've had a moment like this. Sitting on a busy train, heading to an unfamiliar networking event in Newcastle, I found myself wrestling with a mix of nerves and excitement. Big crowds, unfamiliar faces, and the unknown are unsettling—but they're also where incredible growth happens.
How I prepared for the challenge has been my foundation for stepping forward. I use Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a powerful practice that helps ease nerves and restores balance. If you're new to EFT, it involves tapping on specific points on your body while acknowledging your emotions. My favourite calming statement during these moments of doubt is, "Even though I feel nervous, that's okay. I accept these feelings, and I am ready to do this." Tapping through this helps me clear the fear and step into situations, feeling grounded and ready. It's a small but effective tool that makes the big unknown feel more manageable.
How to Take Steps Beyond Your Comfort Zone
What about you? Are there parts of your life where fear or hesitation holds you back? It could be something in your wellness routine, an emotional connection you've meant to build, or even career opportunities you've wanted to explore.
The good news? You don't have to leap headfirst into the unknown. Small, intentional steps can lead to powerful transformations. Here's a framework to help you recognise and act on ways to break free from what's holding you back.
1. Acknowledge the Nudge
Think about an area of your life where you find yourself saying, "I'll do it later," or "I'm not ready yet." It could be a wellness habit you've been avoiding, a hobby you've wanted to try, a meaningful conversation you've been putting off, or even something new, like EFT.
What's nudging you? Identifying this is the first step.
2. Reflect on What's Holding You Back
Once you've found your nudge, ask yourself what's stopping you. Is it fear of failure? Worry about discomfort? Doubt in your ability? Facing these feelings can be uncomfortable, but naming them gives you the clarity to start moving forward.
3. Rephrase the Question
Instead of framing the challenge negatively, choose empowering questions. Shift from "Why can't I do this?" to "What if this is exactly what I need right now?" or "How can I make this easier to step into?" This slight mental shift can significantly affect how you view your challenge.
4. Take One Small Step
You don't need to transform everything overnight. Start with a single, manageable action. Even the tiniest step can ripple into meaningful change over time.
For example, if you're curious about EFT, you could watch a quick tutorial and try it out today. If there's an event you've been avoiding, commit to simply showing up for a short time. The goal? A micro action that feels achievable but impactful.
A Metaphor for Growth
Stepping out of your comfort zone is like planting seeds. You won't see instant results, and that's okay. With consistency, care, and trust in the process, those seeds will grow into something beautiful. Today might feel uncertain, but the courage you show now could lead to blooms you can't even imagine yet.
Inspiration to Spark Action
Here's a quote to carry with you this week:
"Everything you've ever wanted is one step outside your comfort zone." – Unknown.
It's a reminder that the unfamiliar holds so much potential for growth and joy. Every small step you take adds up, building momentum toward transformation.
My Commitment This Week
For me, my small step is walking into that Newcastle event. Instead of hiding in the shadow of nerves, I'll focus on opening myself to new connections, new opportunities, and the growth that comes with the unknown. It doesn't need to be perfect; it just needs to be genuine.
For you, it might mean starting that wellness habit, taking up a hobby you've been curious about, or simply saying yes to an opportunity that feels both scary and exciting.
Whatever your step is, I encourage you to write it down this week. Commit to it, trust the process, and see where it takes you.
Share Your Step
