What Will You Do With Your One Wild and Precious Life?

What Will You Do With Your One Wild and Precious Life?

Last week I was at a business conference in Newcastle, and honestly, I came away absolutely buzzing. There's something about being in a room full of people chasing their dreams that lights a little fire in you, isn't there? But of everything I heard, one line stopped me in my tracks. It's from the poet Mary Oliver:

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

I've read it before, but this time it landed differently. So I want to gently pass that same question over to you.

Not to add pressure. Not to make you feel you should be doing more. Just to invite you to pause for a moment and check in with yourself.

In this week’s Blog, we'll explore:

  • Why living intentionally matters for your wellness

  • What quietly holds so many of us back

  • Simple, doable ways to reconnect with what truly matters

Let's dive in.

Why This Question Matters for Your Wellness

Here's the thing, we often treat wellness as something separate from how we live our lives. We think of it as the green smoothie, the morning walk, the early night. And those things matter, of course, they do.

But true wellness goes deeper than habits. It's about whether your daily life actually feels like yours.

When you're living in a way that fits who you are, something settles. You feel calmer, more grounded, more like yourself.

When you're not, your body tends to notice first.

What happens when we live on autopilot

Living without intention often shows up as:

  • A low-level stress that never quite switches off

  • That "wired but exhausted" feeling

  • A vague sense of being unfulfilled, even when life looks fine on paper

  • Poor sleep, low energy, or feeling flat

  • Reaching for food, scrolling or overworking just to cope

Over time, that constant background hum takes a real toll on your health. Your nervous system stays switched on. Your body stays braced. And you end up running on empty without fully knowing why.

So this isn't just a lovely poetic question. It's a wellness question too.

What's Really Holding You Back?

If a part of you reads Mary Oliver's words and thinks, "I'd love to live more fully, but...", then please know you're in very good company.

Most of us aren't held back by a lack of desire. We're held back by a handful of quiet, very human barriers:

Fear

Fear of getting it wrong. Fear of judgement. Fear of change. Fear of wanting something and then not getting it. Fear can keep us small and safe, but it can also keep us stuck.

Busyness

When every day is packed, there's no space left to even ask the question. We move from task to task, telling ourselves we'll think about the bigger stuff "later". But later has a habit of never arriving.

Self-doubt and "not enoughness"

So many of us carry that nagging belief that we're not capable enough, not ready enough, not worthy of the life we secretly want. That voice can talk us out of so much before we've even begun.

Waiting for the "right time"

Here's a truth, the perfect moment rarely turns up. There's always a reason to wait, and waiting can quietly become a lifetime.

If you recognise yourself in any of these, that's not a failing. It's simply your starting point. Awareness is where change begins.

How to Reconnect With What Truly Matters

The good news is that you don't have to overhaul your whole life this weekend. Living more intentionally is about small steps that move you closer to yourself.

Here are a few ways to start.

1. Ask yourself the question properly

Give yourself ten quiet minutes, a cup of tea, and a notebook. Then ask:

If nothing was holding me back, what would I love to do with this one life?

Don't censor it. Don't worry about how. Just let yourself be honest. You can't move towards what you won't admit you want.

2. Notice what lights you up

Pay attention this week to the moments you feel most alive. Maybe it's being outdoors, creating something, helping someone, or simply laughing with people you love.

Those little sparks are clues. They point you towards what matters most to you.

3. Spot what drains you

Just as helpfully, notice what leaves you flat or resentful. You might not be able to drop all of it, but you can often loosen your grip on some of it. Saying no to the wrong things makes room for the right ones.

4. Choose one tiny next step

Big dreams can feel overwhelming, so shrink them right down. If you long to feel healthier, your step might be a ten-minute walk. If you crave connection, it might be as simple as a message to a friend. If you want a creative life, it might be as simple as five minutes of writing or drawing.

Small steps, taken often, change everything.

5. Protect a little space for yourself

You can't hear what you want when your life is full to the brim with noise. Try carving out one small pocket each week that's just yours. No guilt required. It's how you stay well enough to give to everyone else.

You Don't Have to Do This on Your Own

Here's something I'm really excited to share. Our free online community, The Wellness Success Club, is now open, and I'd love for you to join us.

This is exactly the kind of place that makes a question like Mary Oliver's feel less daunting and more doable. It's warm, supportive, and full of people gently working out what they want from their one wild and precious life, too. You'll find encouragement when fear or self-doubt creep in, a little accountability for those tiny next steps, and the reminder that you're never doing this alone.

If reading this has stirred something in you, the Club is the perfect spot to keep that spark alive. Come and pop in, say hello, and let us cheer you on.

A Gentle Reminder Before You Go

Here's what I want you to hold onto. Living your "one wild and precious life" doesn't mean quitting your job, booking a one-way flight, or becoming someone completely new.

Sometimes it simply means living this life a little more consciously. Being a touch braver. Rest when you need to. Choosing the things that genuinely matter to you, and gently releasing the things that don't.

So this week, let me leave you with Mary Oliver's question, now passed lovingly to you:

"Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life?"

You don't need the whole answer today. You just need one small, kind step in the right direction. Take it. Your future self will thank you for it.

Cheering you on to wellness success,
Katie x
