The Joy of Going With the Flow for Better Wellness

Ever had a jam-packed day turn upside down? Or ended up somewhere new with no plan? That sweet spot, the beautifully unorganised, spontaneous moment, is where some of life’s best wellness gifts are hiding.

Going with the flow offers more than fun. It boosts creativity, reduces stress, grounds you, and brings joy. After my weekend trip, I believe this even more.

We often try to plan and control every detail, scheduling, planning meals, organising trips, and organising life itself well in advance, often in meticulous military detail.

But what if you just let the day unfold?

The Warsaw experiment: dropping the itinerary

My husband Sean and I travelled to Warsaw last weekend. The trip had one core reason: he was doing a HYROX fitness event. If you know HYROX, you know it is intense, highly structured, and demands huge focus, fitness, and energy.

But aside from planning for his event, we made a big decision for ourselves.

We decided to plan absolutely nothing else for the other two days.

Usually, in a city like Warsaw, and on a short trip away, it’s tempting to plan everything. You might want to visit museums, eat at the best restaurants, see all the sights, and make the most of your time. But lately, work and life have been so busy that we both feel worn out by all the decisions we're making. The idea of rushing around on a strict schedule felt more tiring than joyful.

So we decided not to plan anything, but to just go with the flow.

We woke up when we felt rested and left the hotel without a map or any plans. We wandered through the Old Town, enjoyed the colourful buildings, and breathed in the fresh Polish air. When we got hungry, we stopped at a nearby café for coffee and a pistachio-filled Polish croissant.

We didn’t check the time or rush for reservations. We simply enjoyed the present and did what felt good each moment.

The nervous system benefits from spontaneity.

What began as not planning anything turned out to be a real break for my nervous system. Constantly rushing from one thing to another keeps your body in a low but steady state of stress.

When you always follow a strict schedule, your brain keeps releasing stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. Your body stays in fight-or-flight mode because you’re always waiting for the next deadline or appointment. Over time, this constant vigilance leaves you feeling tired, stressed, and out of touch with yourself.

Letting go of plans allowed true relaxation. Without time pressure, my body shifted into a state of calm.

When you stop trying to control everything, you start to feel calm. Your breathing slows, your shoulders relax, and you notice little things around you - the smell of pastries, the sound of people talking, and the feel of the ground under your feet.

This is mindfulness at its simplest: your brain taking in sensory inputs.

So how do you turn these unplanned moments into real chances to recharge and support your wellbeing? The good news is, you don’t have to travel to a different place. There are simple ways to add unstructured time to your day.

Here are four simple ways to embrace the joy of going with the flow:

1. Embrace the micro-adventure

When routine overwhelms you, don’t panic. See it as an invitation to slow down. Start small. Take a different route home. Go for a walk without your phone or tracker. Walk into a new shop. These micro-adventures train your brain to feel safe and excited in unfamiliar, unstructured moments.

2. Tune inwards, and into your feelings

Use unstructured time to connect far more deeply with yourself. When you are not distracted by a to-do list, your true thoughts finally have space to surface. Listen carefully to your emotions. Ask yourself, "What do I actually want to do right now?" rather than "What should I be doing?" This intuitive mindfulness leads to deeper self-awareness and helps you rebuild deep trust in your own intuition.

3. Challenge the guilt of ‘unproductivity'

If something’s holding you back from resting, confront it. Many of us believe our worth comes from productivity. When you sit on the sofa with no plan, your inner critic calls you lazy. Challenge that thinking. Remind yourself that rest and joy are productive too. Resetting your nervous system is vital for long-term health.

4. Practise the "No-Plan" half day

Set aside three or four hours this weekend with no commitments. Make no plans. Pause, and ask your body what it needs. Maybe it wants to read in bed, bake, go for a drive, or sit in the garden. Follow those urges without judgement. It can feel odd at first, but it soon becomes the best part of your week.

Every insight you have during these quiet times is a real win. Celebrate them! Maybe you found a new coffee shop or realised you dislike rushing around on Sundays. These moments help guide you back to your true self.

If you want to add more flow and spontaneity to your days, start by making small, simple changes.

  • Be kind to yourself. Let go of the need to always be productive or have everything planned. It’s okay to rest, play, or do nothing. Give yourself permission to relax.
  • Notice the little things. Enjoy simple details like your morning coffee, a friendly smile, or sunlight during your walk.
  • Check in with your senses. If you feel unsettled, ground yourself by noticing what you can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste in the moment.
  • Let curiosity guide you. Follow small sparks of interest or joy, even if they seem random. Curiosity can lead to great surprises and discoveries.
  • Let go of the need for everything to be perfect. Spontaneity isn’t about doing everything right. It’s about enjoying the process and being open to what happens.
  • Reflect without judgement. After an unplanned hour or day, think about what stood out or surprised you. Let them guide you in the future.

The main takeaway of today's blog? Embracing the unknown, the unplanned, means opening yourself to new possibilities, simple joys, and the deep wellness that comes from letting go of control.

If you are feeling inspired,  try one small way to go with the flow over the next few days. Let your morning happen without plans, say yes to a spontaneous invite, or choose rest over routine for a day.

Notice how it feels and what surprises come up. Letting go of the plan can bring more joy, less stress, and new discoveries that happen when you allow yourself to follow the moment.

When you learn to go with the flow, you stop struggling against your own life. You find more peace, build a stronger nervous system, and become kinder to yourself. You grow, learn, and become more yourself.

So, as always, I’m cheering you on to wellness success. Here’s to embracing the unknown and unplanned. Here’s to finding comfort in surprises, enjoying simple pleasures, and trusting that sometimes the best days are the ones you didn’t expect.
