How to Overcome Indecision and Transform Your Life

Welcome to this week's edition of Wellness Goals Weekly - your space for support, inspiration and practical steps to help you thrive.

We've all been there, haven't we? We stand on the brink of a decision, weigh the options, and go back and forth in our minds. Should I sign up for that event? Should I start this meal plan or that one? What if I regret it? What if something better comes along? Slowly, the indecision grows roots, and before we know it, we're stuck, unable to move forward.

Here's the thing: most of us don't realise that in those moments of wavering and overthinking, indecision is a decision. It's a choice to stay where we are. And while staying put feels safer and less risky in the short term, over time, it quietly chips away at our progress, motivation, and, often, confidence.

If this sounds like you, don't worry—I see it daily as a wellness coach. There are some very real reasons why people struggle to take that next step. But the good news is that understanding those reasons is the first step towards breaking free from indecision.

Why Don't We Take Action?

It's easy to assume that inaction is due to laziness or a lack of willpower. Still, as with most things, the real reasons usually run far deeper.

1. Fear of the Unknown

One of the most common barriers I see is fear—fear of making the "wrong" choice, fear of failing, fear of committing and discovering it's not what you thought it would be. Fear can whisper so many "what ifs" into our ears that we become paralysed, stuck at the what-if stage.

2. Overthinking and Self-Doubt

Sometimes, the problem isn't the decision but the endless mental loops we create around it. "Am I ready to try a new class? What if everyone else is fitter than me? What if I can't keep up?" These doubts tend to spiral, and suddenly, we're not just deciding whether to book the class—we're questioning our capabilities.

3. Fear of Commitment (and Missing Out)

We live in a time when choice feels endless, and with that comes the fear of missing out. What if something even better comes along? What if I lock myself into this plan, and later, I find one that suits me more? This "fear of the alternative" can keep us spinning our wheels instead of moving forward.

4. Beliefs and Mindset

Perhaps the most hidden but most powerful barrier is our beliefs. Do you believe you're capable of following through on a fitness routine? Do you believe you deserve to feel good in your body? Sometimes, without even realising it, people carry unhelpful stories about themselves that stop them from acting.

A Recent Story

I want to share an example from my own experience working with clients. Recently, I had a 1:1 client who spent months debating whether to join one of my Pilates classes. She'd check the schedule weekly, almost sign up, and then talk herself out of it.

When we chatted, she admitted that her hesitation was rooted in deeper fears about her ability to keep up and whether she'd feel out of place. Those doubts had held her back for weeks, leaving her stuck in a cycle of overthinking but not acting.

To help her, we used EFT (tapping) to address the underlying fears and doubts. EFT works by helping to release emotional blocks and shift the way you feel about key barriers. After that session, she had the clarity and confidence to move forward, and the next day, she took the first step and booked her first class. Did she feel nervous turning up? Absolutely. But by deciding, committing, and acting, she broke that mental cycle. A few weeks in, she's messaged to tell me she couldn't believe how long she'd waited. Not only is she enjoying the classes, but her newly found physical strength and confidence is also beginning to show up in other areas of her life.

Non-Wellness Examples

Indecision doesn't just show up in wellness decisions. It's something we all experience across all areas of life. Imagine, for instance, a long week where you feel the need for a break. You've been toying with booking a holiday but can't decide between two options. You read all the reviews, switch between booking sites, and keep putting off making the decision. When you finally go to book, neither holiday is available, and that longing for a restful getaway is replaced by frustration and regret.

Or think about buying a car. You spend weeks researching, visiting dealerships, comparing models, and talking yourself out of each one with questions like, "What if I find a better deal? What if I choose the wrong car?" Time passes, your current car struggles to keep up, and one day, you're stuck on the side of the road, wishing you'd made the purchase weeks ago.

Like standing in the middle of a seesaw, indecision feels safer in the moment but prevents you from enjoying the very opportunities you're pausing over.

The Costs of Indecision

It's worth looking at what indecision costs us over time.

Missed Opportunities

That fitness class you're thinking about joining? It could be where you meet like-minded people or rediscover your love of movement. That eating plan you're hesitating over? It could offer you a way to feel energised and confident about food again. Every 'no' or delay might mean an opportunity left on the table. The same goes for those non-wellness choices. The holiday that offered the perfect escape or the car that would have made daily life easier may vanish while you stand still.

Lingering Stress

Indecision can create a constant hum of stress. That unresolved internal debate can drain your mental energy, leaving you feeling scattered and unmotivated.

Stalled Progress

Lastly, the most obvious cost is that time keeps moving forward while we're busy deciding. Months pass, and nothing changes. That's the real price of not committing.

What's Possible When We Decide, Commit, and Act?

When we decide to move forward, something powerful happens. That decision itself creates a sense of relief and momentum.

Here's what I've seen happen time and time again when clients shift from hesitation to action:

Greater Clarity: Once you choose, you stop expending energy on the mental back-and-forth. Your focus sharpens, and you can channel your energy into making the most of your choice.

Improved Confidence: With each step forward, you build trust in yourself. You prove you can handle discomfort, face your fears, and take charge of your life.

Unexpected Growth: The best part? Taking action, even imperfectly, opens the door to so much more than you expected. My client, who hesitated over Pilates? She's growning stronger, gaining more confidence, and finding a new social confidence.

It's the same in other areas of life. Book the holiday, and you might stumble on an experience you hadn't even planned. Commit to a choice about the car, and you'll find ease in daily travel that you were missing before.

Where to Start

If you're ready to break the cycle of indecision, here's how you can begin:

Decide: Be honest with yourself about what you want. Sometimes, it's not about making the perfect choice but making a choice. Whether it's finally starting that fitness routine or trying a different approach to eating, give yourself permission to choose.

Commit: Once you've decided, commit to your choice. Write it down. Tell a friend. Take one small action toward it.

Act: This is where the magic happens. Action often clears away the doubts and fears that hold us back. Give yourself compassion as you start small, but act nonetheless.

Final Thoughts

Wherever you are in your wellness journey or life, I want you to know this: staying still is a choice, but so is moving forward. Deciding, committing, and acting might feel scary, but they're the key to creating lasting change.
