Finding Glimmers: The Small Moments That Change Everything

Discover the tiny moments of joy that can transform your wellbeing

Each week in Wellness Goals Weekly, I share simple tips and resources to support your wellness journey. Today, let's talk about something gentle but powerful: glimmers.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed, you’re not alone. Our minds are wired to notice danger, so we often spot stress or anxiety first. But what if we could teach ourselves to notice the small, joyful moments that happen every day?

These moments are called glimmers, and they are the opposite of triggers.

Rather than causing stress, glimmers are brief moments that signal safety and peace to your nervous system. They aren’t dramatic events but small sparks anchoring you in the present and offering comfort.

Noticing these glimmers is important for your wellness. When you spot one of these small sparks, your body receives a gentle cue to relax. Your breathing softens and deepens, and your muscles relax. Over time, actively looking for the good builds deep emotional resilience and nurtures a much kinder inner voice.

Glimmers are personal and unique, but here are some everyday examples to help you start noticing them:

  • In everyday life: Holding a warm mug of tea with both hands on a chilly morning, or sharing a brief, friendly smile with a stranger, waking up feeling well after a spell of illness.

  • For your wellness: Taking a deep breath right down into your belly, or feeling the relief of stepping into a warm shower after a long day.

  • The magic of Spring: Spotting the very first daffodil pushing through the earth, or hearing the birds singing early in the bright morning sun.

Spotting a glimmer is a wonderful first step, but the real magic happens when we learn to truly embrace them. When you notice one of these micro-moments, here’s what you can do:

  • Feel the shift: Pause what you are doing. Notice where you feel the sensation in your body. Does your chest feel a little lighter? Allow yourself to truly feel that physical comfort.

  • Think with gratitude: Acknowledge the moment in your mind. A simple thought like "I feel safe right now" or "I am so grateful for this" helps your brain register it as important and look for even more.

  • Do something grounding: Take one deep, intentional breath. You might even want to place your hands over your heart. This physical action acts like a save button for your nervous system.

You can also intentionally spark these fleeting seconds into something much bigger.

Keep a journal by your bed to jot down one tiny glimmer of peace and joy each night. Share your glimmers with friends or family, because joy multiplies when shared. You can also set up 'glimmer traps' in your home, like lighting your favourite candle before work or creating a playlist of songs that make you feel calm.

Even though the world feels heavy right now, things don’t always have to feel that way. You can find light, even in small doses. Let’s start noticing the good.

As you go through your week, become a gentle collector of glimmers. Notice moments of warmth, hope, and calm, no matter how small. These tiny sparks can brighten even the hardest days and remind you of the good around you.

Wishing you a week filled with glimmers and cheering you on to wellness success,
