Finding Traction in Wellness: How to Get Unstuck and Move Forward
Jan 13, 2025
This week, there I was, stuck in the snow. No matter how hard I pressed the accelerator or how much I hoped sheer willpower would work, my car wouldn't budge. My wheels spun furiously, shooting snow and ice everywhere, but I was getting nowhere fast.
Fortunately, a Tesco delivery driver who was behind me in the traffic came out of his van and offered to help. Together, he pushed, and we got my tyres moving again. With a bit of teamwork, I found traction and got unstuck.
It reminded me a lot of how we sometimes approach our wellness journeys. We push and push, trying to make progress, but instead, we find ourselves stuck in the same frustrating patterns. And often, we're too exhausted to try a new approach.
Spinning your wheels in wellness can look like this:
- Following rigid plans that you can't keep up with long-term.
- Exercising tirelessly but overlooking recovery or proper fueling.
- Doing "more and more" because you think it's the only way to succeed.
If that sounds familiar, don't worry—you're not alone. Just like in the snow, spinning harder isn't the solution. The key is to pause, reassess, and take intentional steps forward.
Here are some ideas to help you stop spinning and start building momentum in your wellness this year:
- Pause and assess what's keeping you stuck. Ask yourself, "What's not working for me right now?" It could be that your goals are too overwhelming or that your routine doesn't match your lifestyle. Identifying the roadblocks is the first step toward progress.
- Start with a tiny, meaningful step. Significant changes might feel exciting, but they can be hard to sustain. Focus instead on small, consistent actions that set the foundation for bigger wins—like adding an extra glass of water to your day or moving for just 10 minutes after lunch.
- Build a routine that works for you. Forget "perfect" plans. Focus on creating habits that fit into your life, whether that's prepping meals on Sundays, prioritising sleep, or scheduling short walks between work meetings.
- Don't be afraid to pivot. Maybe one method isn't yielding the results you hoped for. That's okay. Wellness isn't one-size-fits-all. Stay open to experimenting—like swapping an intense workout for a gentler Pilates session or trying new nutrient-rich snacks instead of reaching for old standbys.
- Celebrate small wins. Progress is about more than just scales or speed. Celebrate as you feel stronger, sleep better, or find joy moving your body. Those wins are worth just as much as (if not more than) hitting a traditional fitness goal.
This year, try to approach your wellness differently. When you stop focusing on "going harder" and instead move intentionally, you'll be amazed at how things start to fall into place—without the overwhelm.
Remember, you've got the strength to get unstuck and the power to move forward, one purposeful step at a time.
