Your Autumn Reset Starts Now
Aug 20, 2026
It’s only mid-August and already something feels different. The current heatwave has faded, the rain's back here in Manchester, and this morning I genuinely reached for a sweater, which feels even more noticeable after the kind of heat this summer has brought. The evenings are drawing in too. You glance up at 8 pm, and the sky is already dimming in a way it wasn’t just a few weeks ago. Summer isn’t quite done, but it’s starting to let go.
After the heat of this Summer? Part of me welcomes it; however, every year around this time, before autumn properly arrives, I observe a change in my energy. I get a little slower in the mornings. A little more drawn to cosy evenings and earlier nights. I used to push through that, thinking I have to keep up the same pace. These days I know better.
Why this time of year feels so significant
There’s something about late August and early September that takes me straight back to being a kid. That specific feeling of a new school year about to start. The smell of fresh stationery, a new pencil case, shoes that didn’t have scuffs yet, and a uniform that was still a size too big. Everything feeling clean and full of possibility. And even now, decades on, that same energy tends to show up without being invited. The urge to get organised, start fresh, feel a little more on top of things.
So many of us feel it, this quiet pull to reset that arrives every September, almost like muscle memory. It can carry hope and pressure all at once. An invitation to begin again, but also a signal of what feels a bit wobbly or unfinished. That’s why this season can bring a burst of motivation coupled with a surprising dip in mood, sometimes within the same week, or evenan hour.
Knowing that pattern exists is genuinely useful. Because if you know it’s coming, you can prepare for it, a bit like packing for a trip you’ve taken before. You know what’s ahead, you know what you’ll need, and if you’re organised about it, you pack before you’re already standing at the door wondering where your passport is.
So rather than waiting to feel the dip and then trying to scramble my way back, I use this window, right now, while I still feel okay, to quietly set things up. Nothing dramatic, no complete life restructure. Just a few small, intentional things that mean when the shift does come, I’m already one step ahead. Going into the season feeling ready rather than already behind.
What my reset actually looks like
It’s nothing dramatic. I swap my cold morning drink for something warm, a milky coffee that actually feels like a treat rather than just a habit. I start winding down a little earlier. I get outside during daylight hours, even briefly, because I know how much the light shapes my mood.
And then I start setting things up. I’ll pull out a bright, cosy sweater in a colour that really lifts me and make sure it’s visible rather than buried at the back of the wardrobe. I’ll spend a Sunday batch cooking warming soups and casseroles to fill the freezer, so on the flat days there’s already something nourishing waiting. I’ll put together a playlist that I know works when I need a lift.
Small things. Quiet preparations. Set up with intention, before I need them. Because if a dip does come, I don’t want to start from scratch. I want support already waiting.
Getting ahead of it is the whole point. Preparing yourself now, while you still feel energised by the Summer, is one of the kindest things you can do for your future self. When October arrives and the days feel heavier, you won’t be starting from scratch. You’ll already be ready.
Simple Shifts to Get Ahead of the Change
If you know this season can knock your mood or your energy, this is your time. Not when you’re already in it, but now, while you still feel okay. These shifts are about setting yourself up with care, so that when the change arrives, you’re already one step ahead.
-
Start your daily walk now, before grey mornings make it feel like a chore. Ten minutes count. Build the habit while it feels easy, and it’ll already be there when the season turns.
-
Begin going to bed a little earlier this week. Shift your wind-down routine now so you’re working with your body, not grasping to catch up with it.
-
Make your bedroom somewhere you actually want to be. Fresh bedding, blackout curtains, a clear-out of the summer clutter. Sort it now, before you need it.
-
Stock your kitchen before your energy dips. Get the nourishing staples in, have warming soups ready in the freezer, and keep the hot chocolate within easy reach. On a flat day, comfort should already be waiting.
-
Go through your wardrobe with intention. Pull out something bright and cosy in a colour that really lifts you. Having it visible on a grey morning is a small thing that makes a real difference.
-
Put something social in the diary. Book the coffee, the walk, the catch-ups, the movie nights. When the darker months settle in, you’ll be glad they are already there.
-
Write yourself an autumn intention list. A few honest notes on how you want to feel this season. What do you want more of? What do you want to let go of? Something to come back to when things feel a bit flat.
-
Put together your seasonal comfort kit. Your personal feel-better collection, the things you know actually help. A go-to playlist, a favourite candle, a calming breathing practice, a feel-good film list. Build it now, while you’re feeling okay, so it’s already waiting when you need it most.
Give yourself some grace through this.
Not every day will go to plan. Some days you’ll do a few of these, and some days you’ll manage one. That’s completely fine.
We all move through quieter seasons, patches where we feel less energised, less motivated, less like ourselves. Moving through that with a bit of kindness is enough.
As we head towards the turn of the season, I hope this blog gives you something useful to carry into the coming weeks. Take what feels right and leave what doesn’t. There’s no pressure to do it all.
Preparing for yourself ahead of time is one of the kindest things you can do for the version of you that’s still a few weeks away.
If any of this felt useful, share this blog with someone who might need it. Sometimes the most supportive thing we can do is pass something helpful on. And if you’d like some consistent support as the seasons change, please get in touch.
