Are You Walking The Talk?

Are You Walking The Talk?

Have you ever said you want to live a healthier life but then realised your actions do not quite match those intentions?

It's easy to say you value energy but skip meals or rely on snacks that drain it. Or claim that strength matters to you but never make time for movement. The truth is that many of us struggle to step into alignment between what we say we value and what we do. That's the concept of "walking the talk."

Walking your talk is about bridging the gap between ideals and actions. It's where growth happens and where anything—whether improving your health, relationships, or mindset—can take root. This empowering process puts you in the driver's seat of your wellness journey.

This topic feels especially relevant to me right now after a whirlwind week—attending two funerals, helping my older sister move house, and overseeing the installation of new flooring at the wellness studio. These events left me feeling stretched thin and out of alignment with my own values. It's been a timely reminder that when life gets busy, it's easy for actions to drift away from what truly matters and how important it is to realign with what fuels and sustains us.

This week, I invite you to reflect on your values, uncover where your actions may not support them, and set yourself up for meaningful, lasting change.

Why Alignment with Your Values Matters

Our values are the core of who we are—they guide decision-making, influence relationships, and define what success means to us. But when our actions don't reflect those values, a disconnect occurs. This can leave us feeling stagnant, frustrated, or even discouraged.

For example, if you value peace but rarely allow time for rest, you might notice a constant feeling of stress. If you value connection but never set aside time for loved ones, it might feel like something's missing. Aligning what you care about with what you do reinforces your authenticity and makes living those values feel natural, even empowering.

A Quick Exercise to Identify Your Core Health Values

Determining what you value most is essential before you can align your actions with your health values.

Give this exercise a try:

  1. Set aside 5 minutes. Grab a notebook or piece of paper.
  2. Write down what "being healthy" means to you. Think beyond physical health—does it mean energy to play with your kids? Calm when life gets hectic? Confidence in your abilities?
  3. List 3–5 things you truly value about your wellness. Examples could include strength, energy, balance, independence, or peace.
  4. Reflect. Now, ask yourself this honest question for each value: "Am I walking the talk?" For example:
    • If I value energy, am I fueling my body with nourishing food and staying hydrated?
    • If I value strength, am I finding ways to move my body regularly?

This small exercise can help you pinpoint areas where your actions might need a tweak—and that's where the magic begins.

Practical Ways to Walk Your Talk

Once you've identified your key health values, the next step is to adjust your actions to align with them. Here are a few examples to inspire you, but remember, these are just starting points. Your journey to alignment is unique, and you may find other actions that resonate with your values.

1. If You Value Energy

Try focusing on foods that fuel you. Include snacks like nuts, fresh fruits, or plain yoghurt to keep your energy steady instead of reaching for sugar-laden options. Hydrate often and listen to your body when it signals rest—you'll feel more vibrant and in control of your energy levels.

2. If You Value Strength

Commit to moving your body, even if it's just starting small. Strength doesn't have to mean lifting heavy weights at the gym if that's not your thing. It could look like Pilates flows, bodyweight exercises, or walking instead of a short drive.

3. If You Value Peace

Create space for quiet moments. Consider starting your day with a few deep breaths, meditating before bedtime, or disconnecting from screens for 10 minutes each evening. Peace doesn't come from significant changes but from regular, mindful actions.

4. If You Value Independence

Think long-term—how can your actions today set you up to stay active and self-reliant as you age? Build habits like stretching daily, taking walks, and maintaining healthy joints with good posture and mobility exercises.

5. If You Value Joy

What lights you up? Being outdoors? Dancing? Experimenting in the kitchen? Align your life with moments that replenish you emotionally as much as physically.

Take it One Step at a Time.

Walking the talk doesn't require an instant overhaul. Instead, aim to incorporate one small, meaningful change each week. For example, if you value energy, switch one processed snack for a whole-food option. If it's strength, commit to a 5-minute movement session. These small, intentional steps will eventually build momentum toward a life where your actions and values feel like one.

And remember—this isn't about perfection. No one walks the talk every moment of every day. What matters is progress and a commitment to realigning when you wander off track. Be kind to yourself, and remember that change takes time.

Your Wellness Challenge This Week

To help you put this week's blog into action, I'm inviting you to take on this challenge:

  1. Write down one health value you care about deeply.
  2. Identify one habit or action to support that value.
  3. Commit to it for the next 7 days and observe how it makes you feel.

Example:

  • Value: Energy.
  • Action: Prepare a balanced breakfast every day this week.

Celebrate every small win—you're taking a step closer to living the life you truly value.

Closing Thoughts

Walking the talk isn't just about achieving external goals but connecting your actions with your true identity. By living in alignment with your core values, you become healthier, more fulfilled, and more intentional. This sense of fulfilment is a key part of your wellness journey.

This week, make it your goal to walk the talk one small step at a time. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you for it.
