8 Effective Strategies to Combat Decision Fatigue

Have you ever found yourself overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices you face daily? From deciding what to wear and what to eat to choosing and organising things at home, making decisions for our families, making decisions at work, and social planning, it's no surprise that many of us experience decision fatigue.

This past week was filled not just with the usual family chaos but also with decisions that felt monumental at every turn. I was juggling decisions about building work, college auditions and applications for our youngest, business decisions, and family holiday planning decisions. Each night, I lay in bed, my mind racing through the decisions of the day and bracing for those awaiting me. It was a constant mental negotiation, where the fear of making the wrong choice loomed.

Understanding Decision Fatigue

Decision fatigue occurs when you are forced to make too many decisions in a short period. Like a muscle that tires out after extensive use, your decision-making ability weakens, affecting your overall wellbeing.

Recognising Decision Fatigue

Imagine you've had a long day filled with back-to-back meetings, emails, and countless micro-decisions. Now, you're trying to choose a healthy dinner option. The easier choice might be to order takeout, even though cooking a nutritious meal at home aligns more with your wellness goals. Another example could be when you're shopping for groceries after a long day at work. You might find yourself reaching for unhealthy snacks because you're too tired to think about possible healthier options. This scenario is a classic example of decision fatigue in action - when too many decisions and exhaustion lead to the path of least resistance, often at the expense of our health.

The Toll on Our Wellbeing

This phenomenon clouds our judgment and can leave us exhausted and unable to make the healthiest choices for ourselves. This silent energy-drainer not only saps our clarity but can also leave us feeling depleted, making it even harder to make choices that nourish our wellbeing and happiness.

Decision fatigue doesn't just impact our physical wellness though; it can lead to irritability, stress, and even guilt over making less-than-ideal choices. Decision fatigue can also give away power, as we can be too tired to advocate for a decision where we genuinely care about the outcome. It's a cycle that can feel difficult to break free from, but with the right strategies, it's entirely possible.

But here's the turning point.

In the thick of it, I realised that while I couldn't control the number of decisions I was faced with, I could control my approach to them.

This week of relentless decision-making, as overwhelming as it was, reminded me of valuable lessons. It highlighted the importance of pausing, prioritising self-care, and remembering that perfection in every choice isn't the goal—making informed, heartfelt decisions is.

8 Effective Strategies to Combat Decision Fatigue

1. Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time & Introduce Meal Prep Sundays:

Start with one week's worth of meals. This simple step can significantly reduce daily decision-making and support healthier eating habits. Dedicate a couple of hours each Sunday to prep meals for the week. It's one less decision to worry about daily, and it ensures your family enjoys home-cooked meals. Imagine the peace of mind when dinner time rolls around, and everything is ready to go. In our home, we have about 8 different weeks of meal plans (with pre-done shopping lists for each) that we cycle on repeat.

2. Routines are Your Best Friend:

Begin your day with a set routine. This consistency reduces the number of decisions you must make upon waking, conserving energy for the day ahead. Whether it's a quiet cup of coffee before the day begins or a 5-minute meditation, starting your day the same way can significantly reduce decision fatigue. The best morning routines can sometimes start the night before by laying clothes out for the next day, having lunch prepared, packing the gym bag and school bags, etc.

3. Limit Your Options:

Too many options can be overwhelming. Whether it's your wardrobe or your to-do list, streamline your choices. This is where the Power of the Capsule Wardrobe comes in. A capsule wardrobe is a collection of a few essential items of clothing that don't go out of fashion, such as skirts, trousers, and coats, which can then be mixed with seasonal pieces. Fewer choices mean less stress and more time for what truly matters.

4. Take Breaks Throughout the Day- Breathe In, Breathe Out:

Give your brain a rest. Short breaks can refresh your decision-making abilities. Incorporate short mindfulness exercises into your day. A minute of deep breathing between tasks can reset your mind and ease the strain of decision-making, helping you make decisions aligned with your goals and wellness.

5. Delegate with Love:

Share the decision-making load. Delegating tasks can lighten your cognitive load, allowing you to focus on what truly matters. Involve your partner or the kids in daily decisions. Not only does it lighten your load, but it also empowers them to contribute positively to family life.

6. Set Boundaries for Decision Making, and implement 'Decision Deadlines':

Allocate specific decision-making times. This can help prevent decision fatigue from setting in too early in the day. Avoid making important decisions late in the day when you're most likely to be tired. A decision deadline is a time by which you aim to have made a decision, ensuring you don't spend too much time and energy on one choice. Save critical thinking for when you're fresh and more likely to make choices aligned with your goals and wellness.

7. Prioritise Self-Care:

Don't underestimate the power of self-care. A well-rested, nourished, and relaxed mind makes better decisions. Self-Care Isn't Selfish. Never underestimate the power of pampering to rejuvenate your decision-making prowess.

8. Reflect on Your Decisions and Learn:

Spend time reflecting on your decisions to understand your patterns and improve future decision-making. What felt good? What would you change? This reflection can be incredibly empowering and enlightening.
