6 ways to reset your calm today

How are you doing? Really—take a moment to pause and check-in.

This time of year tends to get a bit much, doesn't it? There's the whirlwind of holiday prep, the pressure to finish the year strong, and that endless to-do list that always seems to grow. It's no wonder we often feel totally wired yet utterly exhausted.

If that's hitting home, I want to share something with you today that can transform how you handle stress and overload. It all comes down to one thing we often overlook: your nervous system.

What Exactly Is Nervous System Regulation?

Think of your nervous system as your body's operating system. Every response to stress—whether you feel calm and steady, panicked, or stuck in a loop of anxiety—stems from how well your nervous system is functioning.

When it's in balance, you feel anchored, alert, and able to take on life's ups and downs. But when it's out of sync, it can leave you feeling frazzled, reactive, or drained. Essentially, your nervous system is your foundation and needs care, especially when life feels relentless.

Why It's Crucial – Especially Now

Around this time of year, with its blend of busyness and expectation, it's incredibly easy for your nervous system to get stuck in overdrive. You may recognise the signs—snapping at loved ones, struggling to concentrate, or lying awake as your mind races from one thing to the next.

When your nervous system isn't being supported, it doesn't just affect your mood. It affects your whole self—from your digestion to your immune system to how resilient you feel when life gets challenging. Prioritising nervous system care isn't just about feeling better emotionally—it's about supporting your whole well-being.

Is Your Nervous System Asking for Attention?

Here are just a few signs to watch for:

  • You feel a near-constant sense of being overwhelmed or "on edge".
  • Your body speaks up—tight shoulders, headaches, or a churning stomach.
  • Sleep isn't refreshing, or it's hard to switch off altogether.
  • You feel stuck in cycles of worry, irritability, or sadness.
  • You're zoning out, procrastinating, or avoiding tasks entirely.

If any of these signs resonate, remember you're not alone. The good news is that your nervous system is incredibly adaptable and responsive to the care you give it. The best part? It doesn't take hours or dramatic life changes to start feeling a shift, giving you hope for a more balanced nervous system.

6 Simple Practices to Soothe & Balance Your Nervous System

These techniques, which I use with clients (and yes, myself!), are simple and effective. They can help you reset and reground whenever life feels too much, empowering you to take control of your well-being.

1.Tap into Calm with EFT Tapping

EFT (or Emotional Freedom Techniques) Tapping is a quick and powerful way to release stress, and it's one of my absolute favourites. It involves gently tapping on specific acupressure points on the body while focusing on the issue you want to address. This technique can help you return to a place of calm in just minutes.

2.Breathe to Create Space

When life feels overwhelming, your breath can be your greatest ally. Try this simple 4-7-8 technique: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale slowly for 8. It communicates safety to your body, switching you out of fight-or-flight mode.

3.Reconnect with Your Body through Movement

Whether it's a gentle stretch, a slow Pilates flow, or a mindful walk in the fresh air, movement helps to release pent-up tension. You're shifting your nervous system from that frazzled, reactive state into something softer and more sustainable.

4.Take a Minute to Ground Yourself

Your senses are a great tool for bringing you back to the present. Take a pause and notice three things you can see, three things you can hear, and three things you can feel. This simple exercise can work wonders for helping you hit "reset" when your mind feels cluttered.

5. Immerse Yourself in Sound

Sound is a powerful tool for calming a busy mind and restoring balance to your nervous system. Whether through guided sound baths or simply immersing yourself in soothing music, sound vibrations can help release tension and create a sense of peace.

I have two remaining dates this month with spaces at my sound healing sessionsDecember 15th and December 20th. These sessions typically last an hour and offer a deeply grounding and restorative experience. They are discounted to £14.99 for the remainder of 2024. If you'd like to join me, you can book here. Spaces are limited, so don't wait to secure your spot.

6.Give Yourself Permission to Pause

Sometimes, the most helpful thing you can do is stop. It might be a 2-minute mindfulness break, a breath of fresh air, or simply putting your phone down for a while. You are not a machine. Rest is not indulgent—it's vital.

It's the Small Steps That Make the Difference

You don't have to overhaul your whole life to feel better—far from it. You can make a significant shift in how you feel, even during the busiest days, by carving out little moments of care and grounding.

Your nervous system isn't asking for perfection; it's asking for consistency. Every small act of support you give it—whether it's tapping, breathing, moving, or simply pausing—is a step towards greater ease and resilience.

I'm here to remind you that you deserve to feel steady, calm, and well-nourished. You're not alone in this journey. I'm here to support you every step of the way, cheering you on to wellness success.

So, what's one small way you'll prioritise yourself and your nervous system this week? I'd love to hear from you. Pop me a DM over on Instagram and share your thoughts.
