The Secret To Living In Flow

The secret to living in flow

I had a fantastic experience while planting in my garden this week and wanted to share it with you. I spent some time in the garden this week, replanting two borders with new plants (about 77 of them!).

While digging and planting, I found myself completely absorbed in the task. The hours flew by, and as the sun began to set, I realised that I had been in total flow.

What is Flow?

Flow, often referred to as "the zone," is a mental state in which one is fully immersed and engaged in an activity, feeling energised, focused, and joyfully productive. Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi coined the term, emphasising that achieving flow leads to greater happiness and fulfilment.

Wellness Benefits of Being in Flow

Living in flow isn't just about productivity—it's also profoundly beneficial for your well-being:

  • Reduced Stress: Engaging in flow activities can lower cortisol levels, reducing stress.
  • Enhanced Creativity: Flow boosts creative thinking, helping you solve problems more innovatively.
  • Greater Happiness: The intrinsic rewards of flow lead to a more fulfilling and joyful life.
  • Improved Performance: Achieving flow can enhance your skills and abilities, leading to better performance in various areas of life.
  • Mental Clarity: Being in flow helps clear mental clutter, allowing you to think more clearly and make better decisions.

Signs You're in Flow

You might wonder, "How do I know if I'm in flow?" For me, it feels like complete concentration. Just like when I was gardening, I lost track of time because I was so engrossed in what I was doing. Tasks feel almost effortless, and everything clicks seamlessly. There's a sense of intrinsic motivation—doing the activity for the sheer joy and satisfaction it brings rather than for external rewards. Additionally, all my worries and distractions fade away, leaving me fully present in the moment.

5 Questions to Ask to Check if You're Out of Flow

Sometimes, it can be challenging to recognise when you're out of flow.

Here are questions you can ask to help you assess.

First, ask yourself if you're easily distracted. You might be out of flow if you constantly check your phone or get sidetracked. Next, consider whether you feel overwhelmed or stressed. High-stress levels can indicate that you're not fully engaged in what you're doing. Then, think about whether you're bored or disinterested. A lack of interest or boredom can indicate that the task isn't challenging enough. Also, reflect on whether you lose track of time. When in flow, time flies by. You might not be fully engaged if you're frequently watching the clock. Lastly, examine your motivation. You're likely out of flow if you're driven solely by external validation or rewards rather than intrinsic enjoyment.

5 Ways to Increase Feelings of Flow in Your Life

  1. Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve in each activity. Clear goals provide direction and keep you focused.
  2. Match Skill and Challenge Level: Choose challenging tasks that match your skill level. If the task is too easy, you'll get bored; if it's too hard, you'll get frustrated.
  3. Minimise Distractions: Create a distraction-free environment. Turn off notifications and find a quiet space to concentrate.
  4. Incorporate Passion Projects: Engage in activities that genuinely interest you and ignite your passion. For me, it's doing something in nature. Find what makes your heart sing.
  5. Practice Mindfulness: Stay present and fully immerse yourself in the moment. Techniques like deep breathing, meditation, Pilates or Yoga can help train your mind to focus better.
